My Daughter the Kook

I have an editorial in Small Town Newspaper today—you can read it here. Make sure you catch the comments afterward to see how some people here interpret my piece. Suddenly, I feel less love for Small Town.

UPDATE: I have received two notes in the mail thanking me for writing this piece. The people who take the time to write a note, put a stamp on the envelope and mail it—theirs are the comments that matter.

Wow indeed! You sparked quite the controversy with your sweet article about mom's letting their kids go out into the world. :) I thought it was quite nice and from what I've seen, you and the husband have done a GREAT job with those young ladies.

Best wishes #1!!! And remember you can still shave your legs in Berk. if you want to! (Sorry I couldn't resist :D)

That was a great article, Robyn.

I will never understand the hatred that people have for California. I am raising my son and (soon) daughter here, and there is nowhere else I would choose to do so.

There is a wonderful variety of people, ethnicities, and a tolerance for differing views that I think some people find frightening.

I hope they stay scared as hell. At least then I don't have to worry about them wanting to live here.

No. 1, remember don't read any more of those comments. They'll just make you angry.

Shan, funny! Let's ask Katie (fornia) what she thinks about that. hee hee

Gina, I don't get it either except that people are afraid of things they don't know. I think California is great.

I thought that kind of ignorant, bigoted, rabidly right-wing, drooling redneck dickwad only existed in our European tabloids' "Be Afraid Of Idiot America" editorials, but there they are, living and breathing and walking around Small Town in broad daylight.

They shame your otherwise fine country, Robyn.

Great piece, by the way.

I was born in California. If it weren't for this giant mortgage I would be back there in a heart beat. You seem much more tolerant of Small Town than me. I dare say I hate it here. If my daughter grows up to be half as wonderful as your girls I will feel I did alright. Small Town newspaper doesn't deserve your talent.

Holy Guacamole! As I recall, California is a pretty big place, home to "dangerous" liberals in Berkeley and also the birthplace of Reagan Republicans. They've got something for everyone. Whoda thunk this sweet article would set off such a maelstrom?

Your article is so beautiful and poignant. Shame the comment section on such a great piece ran amok. That said from a California Kook. :-)
